US Ambassador Visits UNIZULU
The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) International Office within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal yesterday (Wednesday, 18 September 2024) hosted guests from the United States (US) at the Council Chambers, KwaDlangezwa Campus.
This was an opportunity for UNIZULU staff and students to share their expertise on indigenous knowledge systems and entrepreneurship and for the visitors to learn how they could possibly connect Zulu people with American people.
This meeting started with a heartfelt welcome from Professor Vuyokazi Nomlomo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning. She said it was her greatest honour and privilege to welcome the guests at UNIZULU.
“[UNIZULU] regards this as a very significant visit because we are at a critical moment where we are exploring and expanding our partnerships,” said Prof Nomlomo.
Ruben Brigety II, the US ambassador, and Jaclyn Cole, the public diplomacy officer, graced this meeting with their presence. They visited UNIZULU to learn more about the Zulu nation and the Zululand region.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to learn about all the amazing partnerships that exist between US universities and this university, as well as individual scholars and experiences that people have had, sharing their expertise across cultures. And so, we look forward to continue the strong bonds that exist, going into the future,” said Cole.
Prof Nomlomo said this meeting highlights two areas that are key priorities in the University’s strategic plan (Vision 2027). She explained that these are to advance global knowledge by producing globally competitive graduates relevant to the development needs of the country as well as to ensure that the University is connected with communities and knows indigenous issues within our country.
UNIZULU student Sbongakonke Mncube, who was amongst the attendees, shared his journey to Appalachian State University. He went to this university to participate in a programme about entrepreneurship. Through the programme, he learnt a lot of things about running a business and has already started his own business.
