UNIZULU participates in the KWADLANGEZWA  Clean-up and Awareness Campaign organised by the City of Umhlathuze

A team from the Department of Zoology in the faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering at the university of Zululand  recently embarked on a clean-up campaign. This initiative was also part of the community engagement.

The clean campaign was organised by the   Zoology students, in collaboration with different stakeholders which include King Cetshwayo District Municipality, City of uMhlathuze, EDTEA, and DFFE – EPWP. These stakeholders gathered with one purpose – which was to bring together through voluntary participation a community engagement and clean-up campaign.

There were presentations from different stakeholders were made, campaign was also joined by group of taxi drivers and Community Health Workers (DoH) and the campaign was a success.

The aim of this initiation or campaign is to educate everyone about the important of environment and how it will affect us if we fail to protect it as we are facing climate change. These individuals come together in one accord with a passion to live, work and study in clean, beautiful, and healthy environment.

Department of Zoology students, intern and Hatchery Manager Roger Seabi participated with other stakeholders so make the campaign success and more campaigns are on the pipeline to make sure that the message is spread well to the community of KwaDlangezwa including landlords, students, and high schools around.

According to Seabi, besides taking the lead in cleaning the environment, the clean campaigns also aim to raise awareness and inculcate a culture of responsibility among community to be mindful of the environment with regards to waste management.

Expanding on the significance of the impact of the clean-ups, Seabi urged   all employees and students to pick up litter in the peripheral areas that get less attention, where illegal dumping is causing problems. the aim of the action, said, “these areas are not so visible, but I think that in every corner of the university, it is important to be clean and beautiful, and we, as staff and students, can help a little bit with this. “Concluded Seabi.
