On Tuesday, 20 May 2025, the University of Zululand’s (UNIZULU) KwaDlangezwa Campus buzzed with excitement as more than 2 000 matric learners arrived for the first day of the institution’s annual Open Day. The two-day event, designed to guide prospective students in planning towards their higher education journeys, offered a comprehensive look into UNIZULU’s academic programmes, admission requirements, application processes, and available funding opportunities.
Prospective students had the opportunity to engage directly with faculty representatives from UNIZULU’s four faculties. At various exhibition stands, learners received detailed breakdowns of course structures, career prospects, and industry demands, thus helping them to make informed decisions about their futures.
The day began with a formal welcome session, where attendees were introduced to the University’s core values and academic ethos. Prof Vuyokazi Nomlomo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Teaching and Learning, delivered an inspiring address.

She emphasised UNIZULU’s commitment to fostering African intellectual excellence, stating: “Our institution is not just about global knowledge but also about grounding education in African perspectives. We aim to produce graduates who are innovative, culturally aware, and ready to contribute meaningfully to society.”
The highlight of the day was a special performance by Zu, the institution’s famous and popular mascot. This was succeeded by a poem powerful recital by Mcebo Mathonsi, a UNIZULU law student and spoken-word artist. Mathonsi’s words resonated deeply with the learners, encouraging them to persevere through challenges and strive for excellence.
Following the opening session, learners flooded the King Bhekuzulu Hall where the exhibition segment of the programme was held. Here, learners interacted with faculty members, gained insight into different disciplines, and collected brochures for future reference. Career advisors were also present to guide students in aligning their interests with market demands.

The UNIZULU Open Day 2025 successfully bridged the gap between high school and tertiary education, equipping learners with the knowledge and inspiration needed to take their next big step. With such initiatives, UNIZULU continues to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and change-makers.
