UNIZULU FTEN Embarks on His Journey to Becoming a Lawyer

Being a top achiever is not an easy feat. It calls for dedication and perseverance amid hardships.

Thobani Mungwe (18) came to this realisation during his matric year in 2023. The first-year student comes from Mtwalume, a rural community situated south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal Province. He matriculated at Mafumbuka High School in uMlazi C section after completing his elementary education at Hlaba Primary School.

Preparing for his future, he devoted himself to his academics, setting aside time to study at home daily. He was also careful to choose friends that would not take him off his course. His strategy yielded fruits as he obtained his national senior certificate with 39 points – four distinctions in IsiZulu, Life Orientation, Business Studies, and Tourism.

Mungwe is now a registered first-year Bachelor of Laws student at the University of Zululand’s (UNIZULU) KwaDlangezwa Campus. He decided to become a lawyer at the age of 13, after playing a judge in a school play.

The aspiring lawyer chose UNIZULU because he believed that it would provide him with adequate knowledge for his career.

“UNIZULU has produced great graduates, especially the best lawyers. I believe that studying at UNIZULU will be a [stepping stone for my future as] a lawyer,” he said.

While the young man credits his top marks to his hard work, he did not fail to express his gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support.
