Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Postgraduate Supervision Indaba 2023

The Faculty of Humanities  and Social Sciences  at the university of Zululand recently hosted Postgraduate Supervision Indaba 2023.The supervision indaba is part of the effort to improve, and it is aligned with the efforts of the research office to raise the quality of the post graduate student work.

In attendance were the academics from the faculty, those who are currently supervising and those who are emerging and those who are wanting to supervise , the dean , deputy deans and the Director: research and Innovation Professor Bryon Brown. There were a total number of nineteen recipients.

In his welcome address the Acting Deputy Dean: Research, Innovation and internationalisation emphasised the invaluable role of postgraduate supervision  as  one of the key contributors to the institution’s research endeavours. She expressed excitement about the University’s growing postgraduate community, “ we really appreciate you because we realize that each and everyone of you play an integral part in  taking our faculty to greater heights and to shine even brighter” Said Prof Naidoo.

In line with UNIZULU Vision 2027 Strategic Plan, the University aims to drive growth in UNIZULU research and innovation by Increasing research output and postgraduate throughput.

Prof Brown was equally delighted about the appreciation luncheon and said   that the research office is in full support of these efforts of encouraging and inspiring others. Despite the challenges that the academics face they still soldier on. “the efforts of the faculty to organize this luncheon to honour and show appreciation to the colleagues for the work done in facilitating the indaba for supervisors is quite commendable as the research office were quite impressed when we learnt about it. A major job of a leader is to motivate and inspire. I applaud Prof Shokane and Prof Naidoo for your job of encouraging the team members.”

The Dean of the faculty Prof Lulu Shokane, she opened by first appreciating the research office for supporting for supporting the faculty’s mission, also appreciated Prof Smith from UKZN.’ The intention that we have is that all these presenters develop their papers into a publication. We want to measure the impact of the outputs in terms of the graduates to fast track the supervision. Colleagues you have done well.” Highlighted Prof Shokane.
