The way to success is through self-discipline and perseverance. Thokozani Njilo’s story is a testament of this. He comes from Folweni township in Durban where he completed his matric in Sompukwane Secondary School with flying colours, obtaining 42 points.
He got accepted at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) to study BCom Accounting Science in 2025 after taking an involuntary gap year in 2024. Growing up Njilo has always wanted to become a chartered accountant. He developed a passion for numbers and solving problems. As a teenager in his township, Njilo fought against many temptations like alcohol and drug abuse because of his determination to succeed. Njilo grew up in a female dominated house filled with warmth, support and love. His mom and aunties instilled in him the power of support and perseverance which shaped his strong-willed character.
As he embarks on his journey to university life, Njilo promises to continue to stay focused, work hard and keep his mother’s teaching of dedication. His family has also committed to support and guide him as he enters this new chapter in his life.
“We know that Thokozani is a goal-driven and a hardworking child. As his family, we are proud of him. He is our hope. He will lead this family to success more especially because he got accepted at UNIZULU, one of the best universities for producing top students,” expressed his mother.
A soccer fanatic, Njilo has to sacrifice his favourite sport during matric so he could spend more time focusing on his studies. He would have early mornings studying with his friends because they shared the same vision of success and knew that all their sacrifices were essential.
“I used to set my alarm for 3am to study because my brain is able to absorb information easier during this time,” he shared. On top of this he also took extra classes.
As a first-year student, Njilo said his biggest challenge would be staying without supervision from his parents since they always encouraged him to study hard. Meeting new people and getting to know them can be a challenge to him also. However, he is determined to grab the opportunity with both hands and continue being a good example to his peers.
“If you want to be something in life, you need to listen attentively when an educator is teaching. Attend extra classes, focus on your studies, and spend less time with your friends especially those who don’t encourage you to study,” he said.
In conclusion, he pleaded with his mates to be respectful towards lecturers and take their studies seriously.
