A First-Year Drama Student’s Pursuit of Artistic Excellence

As the new academic year begins, many first-time entering students (FTENs) are filled with excitement and nerves in anticipation of what lies ahead. This moment marks the start of an exciting new chapter, one that promises challenges, growth and, most importantly, opportunities to shine even brighter.

The same could be said about Xolani Shezi, a University of Zululand (UNIZULU) FTEN. Shezi comes from KwaMakhutha township in Amanzimtoti, Durban. He was ecstatic that his hard work had paid off when he received his matric results and realised he had scored an impressive 39 points. He is now enrolled for the Bachelor of Arts in Drama, Theatre and Performance degree at UNIZULU KwaDlangezwa Campus. Needless to mention, he is proud to be counted among UNIZULU students.

Shezi affirmed that he has always been passionate about portraying different characters. As a learner in KwaMakhutha Comprehensive High School, he was encouraged by his Dramatic Arts teacher, Sthoko Mngadi, to pursue a career as an actor as she could easily recognise the young man’s talent.

Throughout his high school journey, Shezi made wise decisions by making a conscious effort to stay focused, set achievable goals and prioritising his time effectively. He developed a study routine that worked for him, allocating specific times for reviewing notes, practicing past exam papers and seeking help when needed.

Although the student possesses a positive attitude, he has had his fair share of struggles. Together with his two siblings, he was raised by his mother but sadly she passed on when he was in grade 7, which gave him more courage to try and achieve more to make her proud. His mother’s sister Lindiwe Ndlela and grandmother Busisiwe Dlamini also played a significant role in making sure that he was well supported.

“I faced some obstacles, from limited resources to self-doubt. However, my [grandmother and maternal aunt’s] unwavering support and encouragement instilled in me a strong work ethic and determination to excel. I was always driven to succeed despite the challenges that came my way.”

Other people who played a significant role in his life were his teachers. They contributed to his academic success, providing guidance, mentorship and valuable feedback that helped him to improve more.

He hopes to inspire fellow students, particularly those facing similar challenges, to stay committed, persevere and believe in their abilities. Lastly, he shared that obtaining good marks requires dedication, resilience and a willingness to learn from failures.
