International Education Week Unveils Path towards “The Africa We Want”

The International Office within the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) recently hosted a captivating three-day event with the theme: ‘Navigating African perspectives in internationalising higher education towards achieving the “The Africa We Want”’.

This conference was held at the King Bhekuzulu Hall on the KwaDlangezwa Campus while simultaneously broadcast on Zoom and YouTube.

The event saw multiple discussions and presentations from various speakers who touched on the topics of African identity and culture, decoloniality and international scholarship.

Some of the main presentations were by Professor Chika Sehoole, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria, and Dr Derick Fish, the director of the UNIZULU Science Centre and recipient of the Fullbright Scholarship. Prof Sehoole focused on among others, Western hegemony and its impact on Africa while Dr Fish shared his experience of working alongside and learning from an established American scholar in the science centre space.

Parallel to the programme of the first day was the Study Abroad Fair which was hosted at the Richards Bay Campus. This session was geared towards imparting essential knowledge to students about opportunities to study overseas, the likes of Fulbright (USA), Campus-France (France), DAAD (Germany) and others. The fair was thereafter taken to the KwaDlangezwa Campus on day two.

On the final day, attendees experienced the rich cultural heritage of Africa through music, dance and art.
