UNIZULU Financial Aid Office Hosts Empowerment Session for COID-Funded Students
The University of Zululand’s (UNIZULU) Financial Aid Office (FAO) recently hosted a pivotal meeting aimed at supporting students funded by the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) bursary. The gathering brought together COID representatives, NSFAS officials, and COID-funded students to discuss strategies for sustaining and maintaining funding.
The Compensation Fund bursary in South Africa was established under the Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, 130 of 1993. The Compensation Fund Bursary is committed to helping students earn skillsets, become knowledgeable and form part of the workforce that contributes to the country’s economic and social development. This initiative not only opens doors to educational opportunities for deserving students but also underscores the government’s commitment to social justice and equality.
NSFAS official Franina Machongwa opened the event, highlighting the significance of collaboration between funding agencies and institutions. “We must work together to support students in need. Today’s meeting demonstrates our commitment to providing holistic support and guidance to COID-funded students,” she said.
Ester Mbangata, Senior Financial Aid Officer at UNIZULU, emphasised the importance of empowering students with knowledge.
She said: “Our goal is to ensure that COID-funded students are equipped with the necessary tools and information to navigate the funding process successfully. By doing so, we can help them overcome financial barriers and achieve academic success.”
The meeting provided a platform for COID representatives Ntsodi Mafa and Kate Selogs to engage with students and address concerns. Students gained valuable insights into managing their funding, understanding eligibility criteria, and accessing additional support services.
The meeting was one of a few engagements recently held by FAO towards ensuring that funded students are kept abreast of vital information pertaining to their funders and bursaries.
