UNIZULU Postgraduate Debate on Research Support

The first postgraduate debate series on postgraduate research assistance was recently held by the University of Zululand’s (UNIZULU) Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at LT01-1, KwaDlangezwa Campus.

The theme of the debate was centred around the University’s provision of adequate support for a conducive postgraduate environment.

Professor Velile Jiyane, Head of the Information Studies (IS) Department, opened the gathering on behalf of the acting dean: research and internationalisation, Professor Kevin Naidoo. While sharing the objectives of the debate, Prof Jiyane highlighted that the event was an initiative of IS postgraduate students and that she was the greatest supporter of this.

Various students gave presentations on issues that postgraduates at UNIZULU typically deal with. These included research workshops, ethical clearance, accommodation options during academic breaks, financing opportunities, and support for article extraction and publishing workshops.

Among the points raised by the postgraduates was the need for postgraduate workshop organizers to exhaust all available advertising options to increase students’ awareness and their attendance of the said events.

Research and Innovation Officenager: Research Ethics & Postgraduate Studies in the University’s Research and Innovation Office, expressed his happiness with the students’ attendance and underlined that the University makes every effort to assist postgraduate students.
