UNIZULU Accounting Alumni Visit Campus to Motivate Aspiring Chartered Accountants

The Communications and Marketing Division (CMD) in collaboration with the Department of Accounting and Auditing at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) this week hosted a crucial event which aimed to motivate and inspire undergraduate BCom Accounting Science and BCom Accounting students.

Themed “You Can Do It Because I Did It”, the gathering featured three accomplished UNIZULU alumni, now qualified chartered accountants, who shared their journeys from being hopeful students to finally breaking into their dream industry. These were Halalisile Ndebele, Deputy Director at the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Treasury; Nelisiwe Ncama, Deputy Director at KZN Treasury; and Thobani Mzulwini, Business Analyst at Tongaat Hulett.

Professor Prince Jaca, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Institutional Support, opened the event, sharing his personal journey from school to the workplace. He emphasised the importance of perseverance and appreciated the guest speakers for taking time out in their busy schedules to come and share their experiences with students on the Department of Accounting and Auditing.

“We think that you can do it- not that we think, we know you can do it and the best part of it is that we organised others who are in the same profession, studied in the same university to say I was here too but today I’m a qualified CA(SA),” said Prof Jaca to the students.

The alumni’s testimonies highlighted the challenges they overcame and the crucial support they received from lecturers in the Department of Accounting and Auditing. The guest speakers encouraged students to never give up, regardless of their obstacles.

Students were captivated throughout the event, hearing the different yet similar accounts of each of the invited alumni’s journeys as students and how they navigated their way to becoming qualified chartered accountants.

To bring some entertainment to the event, a captivating poetry performance was rendered by one of the attendees, which lifted the mood and set the tone for inspiration. The powerful words resonated with attendees, highlighting the importance of determination and believing in a higher power.

Sanele Faya, President of the Accounting Society, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, motivating students to stay focused and committed to their goals. “The journey (to) becoming a chartered accountant requires dedication and resilience. You are the future leaders in accounting; embrace challenges and seize opportunities,” he said.
