Triumph Over Adversity: The Inspiring Journey of Velenkosini Sabelo Nkosi

In the small town of Pongola, in the rural area of Khandoba, a remarkable young man has emerged victorious against life’s challenges to proudly don the cap and gown of graduation. A beacon of resilience and determination, Velenkosini Sabelo Nkosi’s plight of being wheelchair-bound has not hindered his pursuit of education and dreams.

Nkosi’s story is one defined by perseverance. Despite encountering a sudden back problem that led him to navigate his final year of high school from a wheelchair, he remained undeterred in his pursuit of knowledge. He matriculated with determination, setting the stage for his remarkable journey at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU).

When asked about his feelings and experiences during his time at UNIZULU, Velenkosini radiates gratitude and positivity. “What’s important is not to doubt the power of God,” he shared with a smile. “I feel super happy and never encountered any difficulties during my stay at UNIZULU,” the graduate affirmed.

Despite coming from humble beginnings, financial support through the NSFAS disability and Fundza Lushaka bursary schemes alleviated any worries about finances, allowing him to focus wholeheartedly on his studies.

Nkosi attributed his achievement to a supportive network that rallied behind him. “When I arrived at the University, I had nothing—no money, no clothes,” he recalled. “But thanks to the kindness of my high school teacher Mr Mkhwanazi and the unwavering support of Pastor Nxumalo, I found my way,” he shared. Upon registering in the University, Nkosi was embraced and continuously supported by a collective which comprised lecturers, the UNIZULU Campus Clinic, finance division, and fellow students.

Looking towards the future, Nkosi remains steadfast in his ambitions. “The next step is to find a job,” he asserted, acknowledging the challenges of navigating a job market that is often not wheelchair friendly. Undeterred, he vowed to persevere until he achieves his dreams.

Expressions of gratitude and pride poured in from Nkosi’s family, particularly his mother and maternal aunt, who reflected on the profound impact of his graduation. “His achievement has brought back dignity to our house,” his mother shared emotionally. Recounting his journey from being born without complications to relying on a wheelchair during high school, she expressed profound appreciation to UNIZULU for embracing and nurturing her son throughout his academic pursuit.

Nkosi’s story is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. His graduation not only symbolises personal achievement but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to all.

Music Career

Prior to registering at UNIZULU, Nkosi unearthed an unexpected musical talent. It all began the day he heard the beautiful melody created by guitar strings on a maskandi song his uncle was playing. It was at that moment that his love for maskandi was cultivated. Presently, Nkosi, whose stage name is Shayezakhe, has carved a flourishing career which has seen him performing in many stages within KwaZulu-Natal and collaborating with the UNIZULU Choir on its newly released double album. His music speaks about matters of the heart, life challenges and money- issues society is all too familiar with.
