Proud Moment for Mother and Daughter Graduating Together

Lerato Zinhle kaMantenga Biyela, 22 years old, and her mother, Fanele Hleziphi Ntenga, 36, made it to the final stage of obtaining their degrees on the same day and during the same session on Thursday, 8 May 2025.

The proud pair from KwesakaBiyela in Empangeni graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with Lerato receiving her BA in Intercultural Communication Science and Fanele earning her BA Honours in Communication. It was a truly special and unforgettable milestone for both mother and daughter.

Ntenga said that after failing her matric due to teenage pregnancy in 2008 she then realised that education is very important and went back to high school between 2011 and 2013.

“Graduating with my daughter is an incredible experience filled with pride and joy. I mean, the sense of accomplishment! I must say it’s a moment to cherish and celebrate the bond between me – a mother – and my daughter. I am overwhelmed in sharing this milestone with her,” said Ntenga.

Her daughter said that she believes their bond will last a lifetime. “I’m overwhelmed with pride and joy! Sharing this academic journey with my mom has been an incredible experience. We’ve shared lectures and discussions, now degrees in Communication Science!! She’s been my inspiration and support system throughout. This moment is truly special,” shared Biyela.
