Nkoane, a renowned South African actress, has not only left her mark on screen and stage, but has also forged a meaningful partnership with UNIZULU. Through this collaboration, she has created three stage plays, providing job opportunities for current and graduated students from the Department of Creative Arts. Her passion for storytelling and addressing social issues through art is evident in her multifaceted roles as an actress, voice-over artist, workshop facilitator, and public administrator.

The “KHANYA Puppets for Change” theatre production, tailored for family audiences, addresses the critical issue of school bullying. Building on the success of “Ally: The Algorithm” in 2023, which focused on cyberbullying, and “LOL” in August – September 2018, promoting self-confidence and self-esteem, this new production encourages individuals to embrace life fully. Nkoane’s messages, advocating for playing big rather than small, have resonated powerfully, inspiring confidence and dream pursuit.

The production skillfully weaves together the rich principles of Ubuntu/Botho, exploring themes of bullying, self-esteem, and cooperation through various artforms. “KHANYA Puppets for Change” promises a unique and captivating experience, combining entertainment with invaluable life lessons, making it a must-watch for audiences of all ages.

Masedi Godfrey Manenye, a dance lecturer at the Department of Creative Arts, extends a warm invitation to schools, parents, and community centers to join in embracing the transformative power of “KHANYA Puppets for Change”. This educational and entertaining production promises a must-see experience that sparks meaningful conversations, fostering a culture of empathy and understanding. The project holds significance in community engagement, serving as an orientation for the Department of Creative Arts.

Meet Khanya, a compelling protagonist portrayed by Nicole Candy Mhlongo, taking audiences on a transformative journey. Mhlongo’s portrayal reflects life’s challenges, presenting them as a mirror reflecting essential life lessons. The encounters with her grandmother and the shared stories resonate deeply, offering invaluable insights into courage, compassion, and community. Embark on a journey enriched with the enchanting essence of African folktales through this captivating theatrical experience.

The show, featuring talented graduates like Zethembiso Shangase and Andile Mxolisi Mtshali, contributes to this unique experience. Families and students are encouraged to attend as the show aims to provide a safe and enriching experience for families.

The production runs from 6 – 16 February 2024, at the Department of Creative Arts, inviting audiences to champion positive change through the magic of theatre.
