Induction of the Executive Committee of Convocation

Induction of the Executive Committee of Convocation

The Office of the Registrar successfully organised the Induction Workshop and Strategic Planning for the Executive Committee of Convocation. This was to ensure that Convocation is empowered to discharge its duties as prescribed by the institutional statute. The session was held recently at the Capital Pearls Hotel, Umhlanga in Durban.

Pursuant to one of the functions of Convocation, as per the institutional statute, which is to organise support for the strategic objectives of the University, the session primarily provided a platform for the Executive Committee of Convocation and the University to identify the central areas of collaboration, and thus synchronise their actions in pursuit of their strategic priorities in line with Vision 2027.

The strategic priority areas explored include, among others, the role of Convocation as regards the full participation of the broader alumni community in supporting the well-defined strategic posture of repositioning their alma-mater as a Node for African thought, encouraging convocants to contribute toward the advancement programme of the institution, establishing a fully fledged alumni relations division, finalising the drafting of the constitution of Convocation with the statute being a substrate, and establishing alumni chapters.

“We are deeply elated at the leadership of our alma mater for the recognition and respect they continue to accord this statutory body. The expansive and enlightening presentations delivered by Dr Mothilall and Prof Jaca clearly reflected the extent to which this University is well-led under Prof Mtose, and the fact that various stakeholders, including the Convocation have been afforded a requisite platform to participate in the inclusive process of making this University a true African University,” said Nhlakanipho Nkwanyana, President of Convocation.

The attendees were:

UNIZULU Representatives:  Dr D Mothilall (Registrar), Prof PS Jaca (DVC Institutional Support),  Mr M Kheswa (Deputy Registrar: Governance, Secretariat and Convocation) and Mr M Phakathi (Committee Coordinator).

Executive Committee of Convocation:  Mr N Nkwanyana (President of Convocation), Mr M Ndimande (Secretary of Convocation), Ms N Sibisi (Deputy President of Convocation), Mr A Zikhali (Additional Member), Ms B Mkhize (Additional Member).
