Message form the Director

I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to all of you on behalf of the International Office. Whether you are an international student joining our institution, a faculty member engaging in global collaborations, or a representative of a partner institution, we are delighted to have you as part of our international community. To our inbound students and guests, we commit to supporting your academic journey by providing guidance on our programmes and helping you easily navigate your time here.

The International Office is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where cross-cultural experiences and academic excellence thrive. Our mission is to support our local and international students as they participate in mobility programmes, facilitate global partnerships, promote opportunities for cultural exchange, research, and professional development and ensure that internationalisation is part of the curriculum.  The role of the International Office is to support and enhance the international experience for students and staff. Our key responsibilities include:

Global Partnerships: The office supports faculties in fostering relationships and partnerships with universities, organisations, and institutions worldwide. This supports academic exchanges, research collaborations, cultural exchanges, and the internationalisation of the curriculum. To date, the institution has several active partnerships with institutions across the globe. The university strategy (Vision 2027) positions the institution as the node for African thought. This positioning has motivated the institution to forge more partnerships and have a footprint on the African continent.

Supporting International Students: The International Office helps international students transition to the institution and life in a new country. It also helps them adjust to academic and cultural differences through the Sisonke Buddy Programme, which is part of the Internationalisation at Home Co-Curricular initiatives.

Study Abroad Programmes: The office manages exchange programmes and student opportunities to study abroad. We organise study abroad fairs and facilitate partnerships with international institutions, helping students explore global academic experiences and develop a broader perspective.

Cultural Activities and Support: To instil intercultural literacy among the university community, we organise cultural events, workshops, and activities, such as International Education Week, held annually. These activities promote cross-cultural understanding and create an inclusive environment for international and local students.

Advising and Counselling: The office provides advising services to international students and faculty on various matters such as academic requirements, cultural adaptation and visa regulations.

Strategic Projects: The office coordinates strategic projects that align with the university vision aimed at enhancing the graduate attributes of our students and producing globally competitive graduates

Overall, the International Office is vital in enhancing the international experience for all university community members.

Studying at UNIZULU

The University of Zululand is compelled to ensure that government’s regulations are implemented and complied with, in terms of the international student’s documentation. Therefore, all international students are urged to be in possession of valid documents before registering with the University

International students must provide the following documents:

  • Valid passport
  • Study permit for UZ
  • SAQA verification certificate
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements, bursaries, cash available/traveller’s cheque to cover envisaged living expenses during the sojourn in the Republic and to pay tuition fees)
  • You must make arrangements for adequate medical insurance cover while studying in the Republic of South Africa before registration

Please arrange your own accommodation if you have not been allocated a room by the University.

It is strongly advised that International students approach the South African Embassy in their home countries for more information or requirements before they come to the Republic of South Africa to study. Alternatively, applicants may visit the Department of Home Affairs at www.dha.gov.za

Kindly note in terms of the South African Immigration Act, 2002, its amendment Act 2004 and 2014 the Registrar of UNIZULU will:

Provide proof of registration as contemplated in the relevant legislation within 60 days of registration; or

– In the event of a failure to register by the closing date, provide the Director General with a notification of failure to register within 7 days of the closing date of registration

– within 30 days of de-registration, notify the Director-General that the applicant is no longer registered with UNIZULU; and

– within 30 days of completion of studies, notify the Director-General when the applicant has completed his or her studies or requires to extend such period of study

Before applying for a study permit, please note:

  1. You must make arrangements to pay all University fees for the duration of studies.
  2. You are required to return to your home country on completion of your studies.

This could highly assist students develop international and intercultural skills without ever leaving the country.

This happens as a result of being exposed to internationalisation through collaborative teaching and research amongst staff and students in the institution.

The University seeks to produce cutting-edge research to promote African scholarship at a global level through teaching and learning and research, that is relevant to the local context of a comprehensive institution.

Graduate attributes

Students who have been exposed to a well-structured international collaborative programme will have an enhanced student experience.
