UNIZULU Celebrates New TAU Fellow

Professor Ayansola Olatunji Ayandibu Joins National Movement for Transformative Teaching and Learning

The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) proudly announces that Associate Professor Ayansola Olatunji Ayandibu, Head of the Department of Business Management in the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law, has successfully completed the Teaching Advancement at Universities (TAU) Fellowship Programme (2024/2025).

Through this prestigious national fellowship funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and endorsed by the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA) academics across South Africa are empowered to lead innovation in teaching, mentoring, and curriculum transformation within the higher education sector.

Advancing Teaching Excellence and Socially Just Scholarship

The TAU Fellowship is more than a professional development programme; it is a movement for social justice and academic renewal. Over 19 months, TAU Fellows engage in rigorous reflection, peer learning, and action research that fosters transformative pedagogical practices.

UNIZULU now proudly counts six TAU Fellows among its staff, with an additional three colleagues currently participating in TAU 6 (2025/2026). The new TAU Fellow, Prof Ayandibu, joins a distinguished group that includes:

 Entrepreneurship in Higher Education

Prof Ayandibu’s TAU Fellowship project, titled “Infusing Entrepreneurship into the Curriculum: Theory to Practice”, aligns with UNIZULU’s strategic goal of becoming an entrepreneurial university. The project promotes the integration of entrepreneurial thinking across faculties, empowering students to translate classroom knowledge into sustainable community and economic impact.

Reflecting on his experience, Prof Ayandibu described TAU as “a transformative journey that reaffirmed the purpose of higher education as a space for innovation, inclusion, and impact.”

“TAU challenged me to rethink how students learn, engage, and apply knowledge,” he shared. “It strengthened my belief that teaching is not merely about content delivery, it is about cultivating socially responsive graduates who can transform their environments.”

Through his Fellowship, Prof Ayandibu explored how entrepreneurial pedagogy, community-engaged learning, and curriculum integration can bridge the gap between theory and practice particularly in rural and township contexts. His project has already influenced faculty workshops, curriculum design, and national conversations on entrepreneurial education in South Africa.

A Growing Community of Change Agents at UNIZULU

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, Professor Vuyokazi Nomlomo, expressed pride in the growing community of TAU Fellows at UNIZULU: “The TAU Fellowship represents a high standard of teaching excellence in South Africa. Each new Fellow strengthens our institutional culture of reflection, innovation, and socially just pedagogy. Prof Ayandibu’s achievement not only raises the profile of UNIZULU nationally but also contributes to our mission of transforming lives through education.”

Building Momentum for the Future

This growing community of reflective educators continues to champion excellence in teaching, curriculum innovation, and student success rooted in the values of responsiveness, transformation, and African excellence.

The Teaching Advancement at Universities (TAU) Programme demonstrates that meaningful change in higher education comes from collaboration, critical reflection, and a shared commitment to shaping graduates who can meaningfully contribute to South Africa’s development.

UNIZULU celebrates this milestone with great pride. Professor Ayansola Ayandibu’s achievement represents both a personal triumph and an institutional success.

His completion of the TAU Fellowship (2024/2025) affirms UNIZULU’s strong commitment to teaching excellence, transformative learning, and socially responsive scholarship. As the number of TAU Fellows at the university continues to grow, so does UNIZULU’s reputation as a centre of innovation and inclusivity in higher education. Together, these Fellows embody the spirit of academic leadership educators who not only teach, but also inspire, transform, and drive meaningful change within and beyond the classroom.
