Kwanele Sphumelele “KaMakhedama” Mhlongo is a dedicated 4th-year Bachelor of Library and Information Science student at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) whose leadership journey has inspired many within the academic community. As the former Chairperson of the Department of Information Studies (DIS) Academic Society, she has built a legacy rooted in service, passion, and purpose-driven impact. For KaMakhedama, the motivation to lead came naturally. “My motivation came from a deep desire to serve, inspire, and be a voice for fellow students,” she explained. With a firm belief that leadership is about making a meaningful difference, she embraced the opportunities provided by UNIZULU to contribute positively to student development and campus life.
Her experience as a student leader has been nothing short of transformational. Stepping into leadership pushed her beyond her comfort zone and strengthened her confidence. It also taught her the value of professionalism, responsibility, teamwork, and integrity. “As a leader, you are always expected to behave in a professional manner regardless of the situation. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity the Department of Information Studies gave me,” she reflected.
Among her proudest moments are the tangible results of her leadership. Seeing students supported, empowered, and heard through the initiatives of the DIS Academic Society stands out as a highlight of her journey. The knowledge that her efforts helped improve students’ academic and personal experiences is something she carries with deep fulfilment.
Balancing academics with leadership has required discipline and intentional planning. Mhlongo prioritises her studies while managing leadership responsibilities with effective time management. She acknowledged the supportive academic environment within the department: “The support I get from the departmental staff has always made it easier for me to perform my leadership duties while excelling academically.”
Her message to fellow students is one of resilience and self-belief. “Believe in yourself and stay focused on your purpose. Challenges are part of the journey, but perseverance, consistency, and faith in your abilities will carry you through. The onus is on you to improve the financial situation at home.”
Mhlongo encouraged students to participate actively in academic and non-academic societies, residence leadership, sports, and volunteer programmes. She believes such engagements build confidence, leadership skills, and lasting friendships, opportunities that enrich the university experience beyond the classroom.
Looking back, she wishes she had known that growth takes time. It is okay to make mistakes, ask questions, and learn at one’s own pace. Every experience, she says, contributes meaningfully to personal development.
Her leadership journey has shaped her into a resilient, empathetic, and accountable individual. It has taught her to lead with integrity and serve with humility. Reflecting on her progress, she proudly noted how much she has grown in handling complex situations and representing her peers.
For her, the spirit of #iAmUNIZULU represents pride, resilience, and excellence. She embodies this through her commitment to uplifting others, representing the University with dignity, and leading by example.
Her final message to students echoes hope and ambition:
“Dream boldly, work diligently, and never underestimate your potential. Your time at UNIZULU is a stepping stone to greatness, use it wisely and make your mark. I wish you all the best in your academic journey and never forget to put God first in everything you do.”
