“As we cut the ribbon today, let it not only symbolise the opening of these buildings, but it also strengthens our collective resolve to use the instrument of education to transform the lives of the people of our province, country and continent.” Professor Blade Nzimande, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, made this statement during the official inauguration of the newly constructed buildings at the University of Zululand’s Richards Bay campus.
On Tuesday, 26 August 2025, UNIZULU proudly hosted the official inauguration ceremony for three newly constructed buildings, each named in honour of distinguished South African luminaries whose enduring legacies continue to inspire and shape the nation. This landmark occasion underscored the University’s unwavering dedication to advancing academic excellence and enhancing student well-being.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of several esteemed dignitaries and stakeholders, including the Chairperson of the UNIZULU Council, Professor David Mabunda; Deputy Chairperson of the Council, Dr Andrew Kaniki; Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation,
Professor Blade Nzimande; UNIZULU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Xoliswa Mtose; Deputy Vice-Chancellors; members of the University Council and Senate; Mayor of the Umhlathuze Municipality, Councillor Xolani Ngwezi; student leaders; academic and administrative staff; representatives from media organisations; and other key partners.
The newly inaugurated buildings include the Blade Nzimande Engineering Building and the Cyril Vuyani Gamede Student Residence, both located at the Richards Bay, as well as the Madiba Complex at the KwaDlangezwa Campus. These facilities are designed to enhance student accommodation and academic infrastructure, with the Blade Nzimande Building specifically housing the engineering faculty.
