From a Childhood Dream to Legal Reality

For many, the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” changes with the seasons, but for Thandolwethu Luyanda Sinaye Mayise, University of Zululand (UNIZULU) graduate, the answer was always written in the stars and in the sharp lines of a lawyer’s gown.

A Calling Beyond the Courtroom

For Mayise, the journey into the legal profession began long before university lectures and thick textbooks. Rooted in a childhood vision, the passion for law was ignited during school career days. While others were exploring various paths, she found a sense of confidence and purpose in the attire of a legal practitioner.

However, as the years passed, that childhood dream matured into a profound calling. Law was no longer just about the “suit and tie”; it became a mission to stand for justice and provide a voice for those who often go unheard. This transition from admiration to action is what defines a true legal professional, a commitment to making a meaningful impact on society.

While at UNIZULU, Mayise has dealt with a lot of disciplinary cases and won an appeal case. She also did a lot of Moot court training. Presently, she is doing her articles at Twala Attorneys. With the graduate coming from a university that prizes African thought, philosophies and people, it was befitting that she joins an all-black law firm.

Why UNIZULU? Nurturing African Excellence

Choosing where to study was as much about the environment as it was the curriculum. UNIZULU was the natural choice for its strong commitment to African unity, empowerment, and inclusivity. The University provides more than just a degree; it offers a community that celebrates identity and cultivates resilience. For Mayise, UNIZULU represented a space where African children from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to thrive, grow, and eventually contribute back to their communities with pride.

Overcoming the “Perfectionist” Hurdle

The road to an LLB degree is notoriously rigorous, but the greatest challenges are often internal. Reflecting on the academic journey, the student shares a candid look at the pressures of perfectionism.

“I realised that success is not only about achieving perfect marks, but also about perseverance, balance, and self-belief,” she said. This mentality saw Mayise obtainingz her degree with merit.

“The intense academic load often led to emotional exhaustion and overworking. Yet, it was through these moments of high pressure that the most valuable lessons were learned. Law school became a training ground not just for legal theory, but for personal discipline and mental fortitude,” she said.

Lessons for Future Legal Minds

To those currently navigating their studies or considering a career in law, Mayise wishes her journey can serve as an inspirational reminder of the essence of choosing an environment that aligns with one’s values and allows one to be their authentic self. Adding another salient point, she highlighted that while high marks are important, the resilience you build when things don’t go as planned is what will sustain you in the legal profession. Finally, she urged the need to listen to one’s calling; pursuing a career that aligns with the person you want to become for society.
