Empangeni High School Matric Learners Gain Insightful Knowledge During UNIZULU Visit

The Department of Human Movement Science (HMS) at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) recently hosted grade 12 learners from Empangeni High School for an insightful Open Day event at the KwaDlangezwa Campus. The event aimed to provide participants with both practical and theoretical knowledge in human movement sciences and biokinetics.

This unique opportunity enabled aspiring sports professionals to explore the department’s academic programmes, consider potential career paths and gain insight into related fields such as biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, sport psychology and physical education, amongst other things.

HMS Head Dr Gerrit Jan Breukelman welcomed guests, highlighted the event’s significance and encouraged learners to make the most of this opportunity.

“Today is your chance to engage with professionals and gain insights about the field. Be curious and imagine yourself as a future University student. Every successful journey begins with a single step, and today it is the day you take that step. Welcome to our department. We hope you have a memorable, educational and enjoyable visit and experience. We look forward to you coming back to our department in the future,” said Dr Breukelman.

Abongwe Buthelezi who is the head girl at the school shared her excitement of attending the open day, defining the experience as “truly eye-opening and inspiring”.

She particularly gained significant knowledge about the sport science field. Buthelezi emphasised the variety of job opportunities available, stating that human movement science is not limited to sports but also includes roles in healthcare, scientific research and surgical settings. “The visit was very interesting,” she explained.

Lethokuhle Mkhize, an educator at Empangeni High School, commended the University for its professionalism and collaborative spirit, which contributed to the success of the event.

“Everything has been so [well] organised. Everything has been lively; even the kids are happy. Ever since we got here, it has felt very warm. It feels so sentimental,” said Mkhize.

In conclusion, Dr Breukelman acknowledged Mkhize’s guidance and efforts in creating opportunities that will help shape the future of the learners.

As part of the visit, learners were also provided a glimpse at the department’s gym and laboratory facilities.
