For Nqubeko Malusi Mkhwanazi from Dumisani Makhaya village in Mhlathuze, entering university represents more than the start of a new academic chapter—it is the realisation of a dream that began in childhood. From as early as primary school, Mkhwanazi envisioned himself as a scientist, driven by a desire not only to understand science but also to use it as a tool to help others.
Now registered for a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Microbiology, Mkhwanazi believes the programme aligns perfectly with his long-term aspirations. His interest in science grew stronger as he matured and he began researching career paths that would allow him to combine scientific inquiry with service to humanity. The field of Biochemistry and Microbiology stood out for its strong connection to healthcare, research, and real-world problem-solving.
Mkhwanazi explains that the programme offers a solid foundation in scientific research and healthcare, with the potential to improve people’s wellbeing. He is particularly interested in pursuing a career as a clinical researcher, where he hopes to contribute to medical advancements and positively impact communities. Beyond its academic value, he also recognises the programme’s potential to provide long-term career stability, enabling him to support and be present for his future family.
As a first-time entering student, Mkhwanazi is preparing himself holistically for university life. He emphasises the importance of maintaining emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing to remain focused and disciplined. Academically, he relies on effective study techniques such as active recall, which he believes helps deepen understanding and improve retention of complex scientific concepts.
Like many students transitioning from high school to university, Mkhwanazi anticipates that managing his own time and meeting academic deadlines without close supervision will be one of the biggest adjustments. However, he views this challenge as an opportunity for growth. He also looks forward to building meaningful friendships, developing strong interpersonal relationships, and adapting to a more demanding and independent learning environment.
Grounded by his rural background, Mkhwanazi remains motivated by a strong sense of purpose. He consistently reminds himself of where he comes from and the responsibility, he carries to build a sustainable and successful future.
“Always remember where you come from and why you are at university. Do not allow negative peer pressure to distract you from your goals,” he says of his daily motivation.
His career interests extend to roles such as clinical researcher, research scientist, biochemical engineer, or biomedical engineer—fields where science can directly improve lives.
As he embarks on this new journey, Mkhwanazi is determined to give his best. With focus, resilience, and a clear vision for the future, he is ready to embrace the challenges of university life and work towards making his childhood dream a reality.
