Celebrating Workers’ Day: Honouring the Heartbeat of UNIZULU
On 1 May, the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) joins the global community in commemorating Workers’ Day. This is a moment to pause, mirror and extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women who serve as the foundation of our institution. From the vibrant corridors of the KwaDlangezwa Campus to the energetic urban energy of the Richards Bay Campus, our success is written in the hard work of our people.
Firstly, there are the hands that build our environment. Progress at UNIZULU begins long before the first lecture starts. We honour our grounds staff and gardeners, whose meticulous care keeps our campuses blooming and serene, providing an environment conducive to deep thought. We recognise our cleaning staff, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our facilities are hygienic and welcoming. Their contribution is not merely physical; they provide the dignity and order that allow our academic mission to flourish.
Our gratitude extends to the security personnel who stand watch day and night, ensuring that our students and staff remain safe. We also celebrate the administrative and technical staff—the “engine room” of the university. Whether it is managing complex registrations, maintaining our digital infrastructure, or ensuring that laboratories are equipped for discovery, your precision and dedication do not go unnoticed.
Together with this we have those who shape the leaders of tomorrow. To our academic staff, we salute your intellectual resilience. Your commitment to teaching, research, and community engagement is what transforms UNIZULU into a beacon of African Thought. By mentoring students, you are not just working; you are building the future of our nation.
At the helm, we acknowledge Professor Nokuthula Kunene, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and the executive management. Their strategic leadership navigates the institution through the evolving landscape of higher education. Leadership is a heavy job on its own, requiring a balance of empathy and vision to ensure that every worker regardless of their role feels seen and supported.
As we celebrate this day, let us recommit ourselves to a culture of mutual respect. Whether you are a cleaner, a lecturer, or a director, you are a vital part of the UNIZULU family. Today, we celebrate the people behind the progress. Every contribution, from the sweeping of a walkway to the publishing of a groundbreaking thesis, is a vital stitch in the fabric of our identity.
Happy Workers’ Day to all UNIZULU personnel. Your dedication makes discovery possible, and your spirit makes this University a home.
