A Life-Changing Journey: My Reflection as an Abe Bailey Scholar

Being awarded the Abe Bailey Scholarship as a student at the University of Zululand was a turning point in my life, one that opened doors I never knew existed and awakened parts of myself I had long forgotten. Traveling to the United Kingdom, engaging with diverse cultures, and experiencing the depth of history across the region was both a privilege and a profoundly transformative journey.

One of the most impactful moments was my time in Scotland, where I felt an unexpected yet deep connection to the people, landscapes, and traditions. The resilience and pride embedded in Scottish heritage spoke to me on a personal level, reminding me of the power of identity and belonging. Scotland helped me rediscover a part of myself that had been missing, a sense of place, purpose, and pride.

This journey also marked a significant shift in my personal growth. I shed layers of self-doubt and embraced confidence through exposure to diverse worldviews and dynamic leadership models. Engaging with scholars and leaders from around the world inspired me to lead with intention, innovate boldly, and invest in shaping a brighter future for others.

I had the honour of visiting Cambridge and Oxford, witnessing the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and touring the UK Parliament where I observed governance and justice in action. A particularly moving moment was seeing Former President Nelson Mandela’s first speech post-election, a reminder of the greatness rooted in our South African legacy.

From seeing iconic landmarks like Big Ben and the Tower of London to learning quirky facts like the origin of my favourite ice cream, every moment enriched me. But more than the experiences, it was the relationships I built, like my ongoing connection with the Mayor of Camden, that made the journey truly unforgettable.

This scholarship didn’t just take me across the world; it elevated my vision and sense of purpose. I return home inspired, confident, and ready to contribute meaningfully to my community. To future scholars: take the leap, embrace the unknown, and allow yourself to grow; you might just find yourself in the process.
