UNIZULU Student Services Department SSD – Guidance & Counselling Section makes advancement in time of intensified apprehension

The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) Student Services Department (SSD) in the Guidance & Counselling Section   is committed to   doing  its best   to raise the level of mental healthcare and awareness amongst  the University community.

The month of October has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month with the objective of not only educating the public about mental health but also to reduce the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often subjected to.

What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Looking after mental health can preserve a person’s ability to enjoy life. Doing this involves reaching a balance between life activities, responsibilities, and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.

Conditions such as stress, depression, and anxiety can all affect mental health and disrupt a person’s routine.

What should you do when you suspect you have mental illness?

Follow these steps:

  1. Pay attention to warning signs.
  2. Work with your doctor or therapist to learn what might trigger your symptoms…
  3. Get routine medical care. Don’t neglect check-ups or skip visits to your primary care provider, especially if you aren’t feeling well…
  4. Get help when you need it…
  5. Take good care of yourself.

It is important to remember that, like with our physical health, our mental health is our responsibility.
