UNIZULU driver turns lawyer

UNIVERSITY of Zululand driver Bonga Khumalo’s perseverance, resolve and dedication has seen him realising his dream of becoming a lawyer, even though there were obstacles. Khumalo, from Mvutshini in Mtubatuba, recently graduated with an LLB degree.

He said his love for law began when he was still in high school but he lacked guidance.

Khumalo worked for different firms before becoming a driver at UNIZULU in 2008. He was over the moon when he noticed the study benefits that came with being an employee.

He took advantage of a package which gives employees an opportunity to study while working. “Every afternoon when I finished work at the Department of Procurement and Stores I had to catch a bus to the Richards Bay Campus where our classes were held from 5pm to10pm.”

He said what kept him going was his passion for law. Khumalo will head off to the University of KwaZulu-Natal in July and for six months will be doing his practical work. “After that I will then do another year serving articles so I can become a fully-fledged lawyer,” said a proud Khumalo.

He advises young people to know what they want in life and where they want to go. Khumalo thanked all the people that have encouraged and supported him in his studies – especially his boss Bongumusa Mabika, the law department and lecturers.
