The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) has successfully constituted its new Council after being under administration for 30 months.
Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande thanked the former Administrator Prof Chris de Beer for the sterling work he has done over the past 30 months. “He has fulfilled his mandate. The execution of this mandate has provided a firm foundation for a new dispensation,” said Nzimande.
“The Administrator has initiated processes that have helped to restore proper governance and administration at this university,” he said.
Prof de Beer has developed formal structures and protocols which have enabled him to schedule meetings and has regularly held meetings with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mazibuko, to tackle challenges relating to proper administration and sound management.
A range of documents has also been produced to ensure effective governance. These include a code of conduct for university Council members, institutional policies and rules and codes of conduct for both staff and students.
Nzimande also thanked Mazibuko and her senior management for working closely with Prof de Beer in ensuring that he succeeded in his mandate.
“As government we are committed to the future of this university. To date, the department has allocated a total of R609 978 million towards infrastructure development at UNIZULU. We have played our part. Again, I am appealing to you to work with us in ensuring that this university functions properly. In fact, I firmly expect it of you,” said Nzimande.
Prof de Beer said he firmly believes that the university is now well positioned to apply the principles of good governance and administration, and to build on the guiding framework provided by the institutional rules and policies developed during the period of administration. “The university should function well under the guidance and governance of the new Council,” said Prof de Beer.
