THE University of Zululand (UNIZULU) is making musical waves around the country as some of its members feature in the popular reality show, Clash of the Choirs on DSTV Channel 161.

Two of the KZN Choir members from UNIZULU, Bhekani Buthelezi and Nontsikelelo Mbhele brought the choir to the University to get blessings and also render a few items for the staff and students.   Buthelezi has been granted a scholarship to do his doctoral degree at Appalachian State University in the US.

Buthelezi, who is also the conductor for the University Choir said Robbie Malinga, the renowned musical maestro, is passionate about the visit to the University. “Robbie is very happy about this initiative. This choir is doing miracles in the competition representing the province in the reality TV show,” said Buthelezi adding that Malinga has shown a huge interest in recording the album for the UNIZULU Choir.

Congratulating Team KZN for their outstanding performance at the Clash of the Choirs TV Reality Show, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zululand, Professor Fikile NM Mazibuko said:  “The nurturing and exposing young talent in Music and the performing arts generally is one way a country defines its cultural space and creativity in the world. Our Choir and its choristers, Bhekani and Nontsikelelo in this case, continue to make all of us at UNIZULU proud South Africans.”

KZN Choir is a combination of members from all corners of KwaZulu-Natal who were auditioned and handpicked by the music legend, Malinga. The KZN Choir has made it to the top three, the final stage of the competition.

The event was held at the KwaDlangezwa Campus on Tuesday, 24 June 2014. The choir will then be heading to the finals the next day. On Sunday 29 June 2014 the people of South Africa will get a chance to vote for the winner.
