The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) held an opening ceremony at the KwaDlangezwa Campus 13 February. Delivering the State of the University Address, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fikile Mazibuko said UNIZULU remains unapologetically committed to upholding the new ethos of our country that promotes quality service, human rights and equality. “We will not abrogate the responsibility of protecting and enshrining these values in our day to day operations. The same applies to the government’s National Development Plan (NDP),” she said.
Professor Mazibuko added that UNIZULU positions itself as a strategic role player in the implementation of the NDP, saying that it definitely has the capacity to meaningfully contribute in the rolling out of the NDP.
Professor Mazibuko was also proud to indicate that UNIZULU remains a University of choice to many, citing the Central Application Office statistics that showed a whooping total of 175 172 applications received as at January 2014. “We will continue to strive for access that enhances potential, and to nurture ability and experience. We are committed to improving the standards and quality of our graduates and to produce graduates of national and international stature and repute,” said Professor Mazibuko.
Acting Council Chairperson and member of Council, Mr Gugu Sibiya officially opened the ceremony and welcomed all present. He said that as Council they were excited to be associated with the University and will do all in their power to contribute for the benefit of staff and students.
President of the Student Representative Council Siyanda Mkhize welcomed students and urged them not lose focus but concentrate on their studies. “We welcome you to UNIZULU and hope that your stay here will be a pleasant one,” said Mkhize.
Other Council members present were Mr Sibusiso Xulu and Mr Emmanuel Dube.
