University of Zululand’s graduate, Sphamandla Gumede has beaten the odds after graduating with a BA Communication Science and History degree recently. He has appealed to students to be focused on what they do and to respect others.
Gumede, from Vryheid, said he could not have done it if he wasn’t focused. “I come from an underprivileged family and I studied with the assistance of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nasfas). I’m currently doing my honours through the National Research Fund,” said Gumede.
He said: “I’m very thankful to the University of Zululand and the government at large for the opportunities availed to us. Without the assistance and support from the Department of Communication Science and History lecturers and students I would not have persevered.”
Due to his dedication and spirited performance assisting with events and numerous duties, Gumede has been employed as an intern at the Communications and Marketing Department where he earns a stipend. “I’m very grateful for this as it helps me to gain experience and to take care of a few things in my off camp accommodation and clothe myself.”
He stated that stress among university students leaving home for the first time and going away for school can be very difficult for some people. He added that in many cases for university newcomers this is their first time being away from their home and parents. Some of them, he said, engage in illegal activities and drop out of tertiary institutions, but this was not the case with Gumede who sees himself as communications and marketing guru in the future.
