Trailblazer in Academia

I am proud of African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA ) for the ongoing Leadership and mentorship role they provide  to Women. I commend AWCA for recognizing the leadership and tenacity of Siphelele Khomo(CA), a change maker who has dedicated her life and career to advancing women in Accountancy.

It is under Mrs Khomo persistent and consistent performance that resulted in UNIZULU offering the highly sought after accounting degree and received the accreditation when the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) gave UNIZULU a status to offer the qualification of B.Comm  in Accounting Science in 2018.

The Network of Executive Women’s (NEW) Women 2020 Report points out, “women are especially well suited to lead in today’s changing marketplace.” A 2012 McKinsey survey showed that the four “most important leadership attributes for success” identified by global business executives – “intellectual stimulation, inspiration, participatory decision-making and setting expectations/rewards – were most commonly found among women leaders.”

Further omen are also ranked as more “inclusive, collaborative, and empathetic” than their opposite colleagues, and offer diverse perspectives and skills that are essential for cultivating creativity, innovation and differentiation necessary for companies to attract customers. Women also outpace the dominant gender in higher education, earning a higher percentage of bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees than their counterparts. Yet, the gender gap in senior leadership positions persists.

It is this expression that the University of Zululand is always advancing to promote and recognise the distinct calibre of its Academic Staff members who are globally competitive that makes Mrs Khomo’s recognition and receiving an  award as the Trailblazer in Academia equally rewarding.
