Statement by the University concerning the death of students over the past weekend

It is with deep sadness and dismay that UNIZULU has received news of the passing of 2 students. The first student incident occurred on Saturday 15th September as a result of a car accident in Richards Bay. The second incident happened on Sunday 16th September at the University’s KwaDlangezwa. Campus. It is alleged that the incident came as a result of an argument which resulted in the fatal dispute. The University extends its deepest sympathies to the student’s family and friends, as well as the University community for the tragic loss of young lives.

The University abhors violence as a way of resolving conflict of any sort. It is especially opposed to the use of force and violence on campuses, as a way of resolving problems. It is our view that this constitutes a fundamental violation of the hard won constitutional right of the sanctity of human life.

The University is providing counselling services to all the affected parties and we urge anyone who require counselling services to advise the Student Support Service for further assistance. University leadership has also taken swift and decisive action by initiating an independent investigation which will unravel facts surrounding the incidents as the details are not clear at the moment. The university has also taken note that the matter is under the full police investigation

The University community is urged to allow these processes to proceed unhindered.
