THE University of Zululand (UNIZULU) 2013/2014 Student Representative Council (SRC) was inaugurated by the Honourable Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Senzo Mchunu on 29 October 2013.
The ceremony which was held on KwaDlangezwa Campus saw thousands of students descending to the King Bhekuzulu Hall to witness the occasion.
The Premier said Student Representatives Councils of yester-years was a great school for leadership. “It produced statesmen, intellectuals, thinkers and leaders of note, who have not just matured to be leaders of our struggle for freedom and democracy but have attained huge international recognition and respect amongst the world leaders,” he said.
Mchunu’s message to the SRC was that they should appreciate what they have inherited and seriously ponder on what their contribution will be in taking forward the dream of the early generations of the student leaders.
“The student leaders of the 70s and 80s left behind a legacy of youth involvement in finding solutions for their country. The high level of discipline, dedication and selfless service to humanity characterized students’ leadership of that time,” the Premier said.
UNIZULU Vice Chancellor Professor Fikile NM Mazibuko said the students of UNIZULU have spoken and have chosen their leaders and their governance.
“Congratulations to the students and the various student formations for conducting the elections with vigour, integrity, transparency and honesty. I also acknowledge and thank the IEC, Professor François de Villiers and members of the SRC Election Committee in particular, for conducting the elections with the utmost professionalism and integrity.”
Mazibuko also thanked the Acting Dean of Students, Dr Zethu Mkhize and members of the Executive and academic leadership, UNIZULU safety and security officers for conducting peaceful elections and all registered students who took it upon themselves to exercise their vote and elect their SRC.
The SRC President, Siyanda Mkhize pledged for the commitment among his fellow SRC members and promised students to remain their representative throughout their term of office.
UMhlathuze Mayor and member of UNIZULU Council, Councillor Elphas Mbatha and Executive Director of Richards Bay Campus, Dr Isaac Machi officially installed the new SRC members at the ceremony.
