UNIZULU honoured its top athletes and administrators as the winners of 2013’s major awards.

Sabelo Dladla of UNIZULU Boxing Club received the Sportsman of the year award for his endeavours in 2012 and 2013.  He performed well in the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Games in 2012 which were hosted by UNIZULU.  He was named the best boxer and he received national colours. He was also selected to represent South Africa at the world student games in Kazan, Russia.

Phumla Moloi of UNIZULU Taekwondo Club was awarded the Sportswoman of the year award for her achievements in 2012 and 2013 in the USSA Games and for taking part in the Korean Ambassador Cup Tournament. She received Gold (Poomsae) in the USSA games and Bronze (sparring) in the Korean Ambassador Cup.

UNIZULU Volleyball Club received the Club of the Year award for being extremely active in 2013. It participated in both local and national tournaments establishing and forming a successful outreach programme and partnership with KwaDlangezwa High School.  The Males’ team came second in the USSA National Games 2013 receiving a silver medal. The ladies team came third and it received a Bronze medal.

The Swallows Soccer Club received the Most Improved Sport Code award for qualifying in the provincial league and for achieving position 1 to participate in the National Tournament in 2013.

Mathenjwa Lindani of Swallows Soccer Club was named the Manager of the year for being active in the administration of the Club in 2013 ensuring that all weekend games and national games were organised.

Sandile Khoza of UNIZULU Volleyball Club received the Players’ player of the year award.  He was recognised for being the best attacker and for scoring the most goals in the University Sports South Africa (USSA) held at the University of Fort Hare.

Mkhulumeli Buthelezi of UNIZULU Volleyball Club was awarded the Coach of the Year award.  He achieved second place for the male team and was placed in the third place for female team. He received Silver and Bronze medals in national games.

Sbusiso Nkwanyana of UNIZULU Karate Club was named the Captain of the year.  He was recognised for being disciplined, dedicated to his club, time management, a good communicator, humble and understanding. He received accolades for being very active and concerned about wellbeing of his Club.

UNIZULU hosts USSA Summer games

UNIZULU successfully hosted two national tournaments for the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Bodybuilding and USSA Softball at Richards Bay Campus. This tournament was attended by University students across South Africa.  A number of UNIZULU students play in the national teams and in the national sporting codes executive games. Successful achievements have been noted in Volleyball, Bodybuilding, Boxing, Men’s soccer and UNIZULU Soccer Club which plays in the SAFA Castle League.
