Social Work gets Fulbright boost

The Department of Social Work was fortunate to host Fulbright Programme Specialist, Prof Mari Dias of Johnson and Wales University, USA from 11-21 June 2013. During her visit, level 3 Social Work students were trained on counselling and counselling theories through role plays. She has also been part of the panel that conducted interviews with level 4 Social Work students who had been on internship with the Departments of Social Development and Correctional Services, hospitals, NGOs and industry.

Dias said: “I was here to train students on theory and techniques. The feedback was great and the students were very co-operative. We all benefitted as I also learnt a lot in return.”

Department of Social Work’s Professor Ngenisiwe Ntombela said students shared their experience and how they were able to integrate what they have learnt in the classroom situation with real clients. In addition, the department has benefitted from knowledge sharing at a three day social work supervisor’s session which was held at the Arts Auditorium.
