Before coming to UNIZULU, Professor Garrod held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Resources and Operations at Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein. At that institution he was responsible for introducing a revenue driven resource allocation model and new and improved catering facilities for staff and students. He also oversaw the realization of over R300 million infrastructure development, established a sustainability office that led to carbon footprint reductions, and their consequential economic savings, and eliminated long lasting salary anomalies. He has also acted as Vice-Chancellor of CUT for the period June to October 2015.
Before joining CUT, Professor Garrod was Director of Higher Colleges of Technology Al Ain United Arab Emirates. The Higher Colleges of Technology is a national system of 17colleges with over 19,000 students, providing post-secondary education (similar to a comprehensive university in South Africa). As Director in Al Ain he held overall leadership for both the men’s and the women’s colleges. Prof Garrod had responsibility for educational programming, quality enhancement, financial and human resources, planning, marketing and performance.
His teaching experience spans many universities and many different systems in England, Scotland and Wales, mainland Europe, the U.S.A, Canada, the Far East, the Middle East and Africa and at undergraduate, postgraduate and research levels.
Amongst his personal achievements, in 2001, Prof Garrod ran from Rome to Glasgow, a distance of 2,451 kilometers, in 61 days of running, averaging a marathon a day for the entire period. The run was part of the celebrations of the 550th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Glasgow, at which Professor Garrod held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law and Financial Studies.
