The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) Netball team has been crowned champions of the KwaZulu-Natal intervarsity games. The UNIZULU team is now number one in the province after thrashing all three competitors: the Durban University of Technology (DUT), the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and Mangosuthu University of technology (MUT), during the one-day tournament.
The games were held at UKZN’s Edgewood Campus on May 16 where the UNIZULU team proved too much for the other competitors. Against MUT, the mighty UNIZULU team scored 40 points against MUT’s meagre 10 points. UNIZULU also beat DUT by 27 points to 17 and against UKZN, the team scored 37 points while the hosts could only muster 10 points.
Nonkonzo Hadebe, the chairperson of the UNIZULU Netball team attributed the team’s successes to high fintness levels. “When it comes to fitness we are better than anyone. We train for three hours each day on weekdays and we train with members of the male netball teams”.
She also had high praises for coach Zipho Khumalo who she said is the “best coach ever”. Hadebe said the team was now preparing for the University Sports South Africa (USSA) games to be held from the 29th of June till the 3rd of July.
“We are definitely the team to watch,” she said. The UNIZULU team competes in the Pool C stream of the USSA netball tournament.
Last year the UNIZULU team were Pool C runners up after losing the final. This year the team is determined to win and move up to the Pool B stream.
