As yet another year draws to an end; it is a time to reflect on a journey traversed. The ride has not been without any challenges but generally it has been a positive one for the University of Zululand.
One of these positives is that the research culture at the university continues to grow.
It emerged at the recent Research Awards that not only are more and more of our academics taking part in research and publishing more, but there is also a move towards innovation with one patent having been registered this year.
It is encouraging to learn of some of the research being conducted by some students at UNIZULU. It includes research into a cheaper Smart Home App by second-year computer science student and also the research into a non-GPS based Smart Drive App.
All these are very practical apps which are geared towards making life easier and promoting safe driving.
This issue of Ongoye Online focuses mainly on the research initiatives.
As Professor Cheryl Potgieter, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Deputy Vice-Chancellor and head of Humanities College said at the awards ceremony, UNIZULU’s good story is emerging “chapter by chapter”.
We certainly hope that more chapters would be added to the story next year as we continue to strive to be the best that we can be.
As this is the last edition of Ongoye Online for 2014, I therefore take this opportunity to wish the entire UNIZULU community a happy festive season and a safe transition to what would hopefully be a prosperous 2015. We also wish our students and staff well in their year-end examinations.
