The Karate team scored big at the recent provincial karate tournament with all four members of the team coming back with trophies.Second-year Nursing Science student, Qiniso Gumede, who is also the chairperson of the UNIZULU karate team got position one in the KATA category. This is the category where athletes have to display skill in executing a series of specific karate move and techniques Another UNIZULU student Simon Dube got position two in the KATA category. Gumede also put a brave fight in the knockdown category for males under 70kg where he got position three. The two female atheletes, Snenhlanhla Manukuza and Zanele Ngidi, who were part of the team also got Bronze in the knockdown category. Both Manukuza and Ngidi competed in the division for females who weigh less than 65kg The tournament was held on May 30 in Port Shepstone and saw hordes of athletes from the various KZN districts participating. Gumede thanked the coach, the officials and the University for the support that the karate team got. He said the team would keep on flying the UNIZULU flag high.
