I’m My Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams- Dr Criselda Kananda

The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) had the pleasure of honouring media personality, motivational speaker and medical underwriter Criselda Kananda with a doctoral degree in social work at its King Bhekuzulu Hall on Monday, 7 December 2020.

The conferment occurred on day one of the weeklong 2020 graduation ceremonies.

A holistic wellness champion well known for her various talk slots on radio stations such as Metro FM, Dr Kananda’s laudable work spans a decade in a number of fields. She has worked with different government departments as well as the corporate sector on implementing workplace wellness programmes both nationally and internationally. She owns a consultancy and talk service, Positive Talk Services, which focuses on, among other services, workplace wellness programmes and advocacy for total wellbeing. This includes topics on self-development and growth, personal financial management, and psychological wellbeing as well as nutrition and health and sexually transmitted disease management.

As a speaker, she has travelled to many countries which include the United States of America during the 2006 United Nations General Assembly Special Meeting on communicable diseases which took place in New York.

On her recognition Dr Kananda said: “I thank my family for always being supportive of my chosen journey (as well as) my teachers. It is a huge honour to receive this honorary doctorate.” She added that growing up as an average learner who was always surrounded by overachievers motivated her to strive for greatness. In so doing, she developed the zeal to “be the change” she wanted to see the world.

Moving the spotlight to the other graduates in the session, Dr Kananda congratulated them for their accomplishments. She thereafter left them with a few points upon which to ponder, advising them to “always do and say the right thing even when it is not popular or favourable”, remain authentic and always remain firmly planted in their roots.
