Gearing for Teaching and Learning Success in 2020 and Beyond

In order to plan and debrief the challenges and successes of teaching and learning at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, under the guidance of Professor Sechaba Mahlomaholo, is hosting a two-day strategic planning event at the Bon Hotel in Empangeni.

The event, which began on Wednesday, 29 January 2020 and ends on Thursday, 30 January 2020, is driven by the theme: Towards access with success. It seeks to cross-examine the teaching and learning strategic goals for 2020 and beyond.

The strategic objectives of these sessions is to look at the success of and challenges facing the higher education sector and UNIZULU’s response to new learning areas; alignment of core business: entrepreneurship development/education; faculties; decoloniality and curriculum transformation; and Africa Agenda 2063 to mention but a few.

The occasion was attended by Prof Mogomme Masoga, Prof Lorraine Greyling, Prof Mncedisi Maphalala and Prof Nokuthula Kunene, the deans of the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Administration and Law, Education as well as Science and Agriculture. Also present was Prof Maria Mabusela, Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre, who later shared the success stories, challenges and future plans.

In his opening address, Prof Mahlomaholo focused on understanding how far the University has come in terms of realising its teaching and learning strategic goals as a basis for planning for 2020. “We hope to make immense progress and innovative ideas in teaching and learning, student development and show excellence in curriculum transformation; curriculum development; technology integration as well as local and international partnerships and collaborations in 2020 and beyond. I hope the faculties lead by your pioneering leadership as deans of faculties present will make this strategic planning a success,” Prof Mahlomaholo said.
