Dr Shonhai graduated with a PhD in Biochemistry in 2007 from Rhodes University and joined UNIZULU in June 2008. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious George Foster Research Fellowship, by Alexander von Humboldt of Germany, which facilitated his travel as a visiting scientist to Marburg University in 2012. Dr Shonhai is currently editing a book on the role of heat shock proteins in the development of malaria together with his mentor and collaborator, Prof Greg Blatch. The book will be published by Springer later this year. Dr Shonhai’s main research focus is on the role of heat shock proteins in the development and pathogenesis of malaria. He is also exploring prospects of targeting heat shock proteins as an alternative antimalarial intervention strategy.
