BIOCHEMISTRY AND BOTANY

Purpose of the programme
This programme equips students both theoretically and practically on key areas of plant science relating to plant physiology, genetics, biochemistry, morphology, taxonomy, ecology and biodiversity. The recommended second majors are Biochemistry, Geography, Hydrology, Microbiology or Zoology.

Employment opportunities citing typical employers
Students with this qualification can be teachers or lecturers either in schools or universities. They can be researchers in universities, national institutes and conservation bodies. Students can also serve as conservationists in National Parks, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and Private Game Reserves. They can also become Plant Diversity and Ethnobotanical Specialists in Herbaria, Botanical Gardens, Health organizations, Ethnobotany units, and Government organizations such as Department of Water Affairs and Forestry as well as Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

Entrepreneurial opportunities citing sector, industry and typical businesses
Different plant related research undertaken by students will enable them to team up with specialists and give advices to different private and governmental sectors with related interest. This includes health and agricultural sectors, to name a few.

This qualification articulates vertically with the BSc Honours Botany offered within the department and at other institutions in the country.
