Animal Science

Purpose statement
The objective of this programme is to prepare graduate with the basic skills and knowledge necessary for entering the animal science industry. This programme will enable the graduate to gather knowledge in animal production, breeding, nutrition, health and pasture production and management. The graduates are prepared to be able observe, ask questions, identify and establish basic procedures to solve on farm problems in different production systems. They are also equipped with knowledge to become self-employed after their degree especially in poultry and ruminant production where they designed mini-production systems that are functional and profitable.

Employment opportunities citing typical employers
The Animal Science industry plays a significant role in South African economy especially in the agricultural sector. Graduate who possesses animal science degree will get to work as a general animal scientist in research centres, nutritionist in feed companies, farm managers, animal science technicians, extension workers or adult education specialist and research scientist. Some of them can work in a college or university as lecture or researcher.  Many of them have been absorbed by then Department of Agricultures under numerous programs. Agricultural Research Council and the South African Society of Animal Science are some of the sectors that have been absorbing these graduates. The Private section is one of the highest employees of these graduates both national and international where the work at different production units such as poultry, dairy, beef, pig, goat, sheep, horse and many others.

Entrepreneurial opportunities
Animal Science industry has many entrepreneurial opportunities such as poultry and livestock enterprise. In the poultry sector, there is meat production and egg production and in livestock production there is small and large ruminant production. Graduate may start their business in animal science to supply good quality protein that is high in demand both national and international to meet the ever growing human population. Other opportunities included feed formulation companies that require animal science qualification. Animal require feed all the times for appropriate growth and optimum production. Therefore, graduate can open their business in formulating feed for different animals such as chickens that required different diet at different growth stage as well as ruminants. Graduate can also open their own research station and help young animal scientist with the required resources, skill and experience and conduct research to improve the animal science industry.

Vertical articulation for further / higher degree studies where
The design of these programme enables graduate to proceed with their post-graduate studies. This includes honours, masters and doctoral degree. Obtaining these qualifications will make the students attractive as professional and knowledge workers to work as academics at universities, farm managers and as researchers in public and private sectors.

Horizontal articulation with other qualifications where applicable
This programme is designed to articulate horizontally to animal science and botany, soil science, zoology, physical science and hydrology qualification.
