As the Communications and Marketing Division (CMD) of the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), we are focused on improving and developing communications and marketing initiatives that are in keeping with international standards of a comprehensive university. As a division, our focus is geared towards enhancing internal communication amongst staff, students and management with an equivalent approach in keeping stakeholders, the global community, communities which we serve as well as the private, corporate and government sector informed about the latest developments by the UNIZULU staff, students and alumni.
What we do
CMD is responsible for the marketing of the University of Zululand, as well as for internal and external communication with stakeholders in support of the University’s endeavours of becoming a leading comprehensive university providing quality education. The division creates and manages a comprehensive and integrated strategic marketing and communications programme that includes: • Managing and enhancing the UNIZULU brand • Advertising • Functions and events management • Internal communication strategies • Media liaison • Production of promotional materials and university-wide publications • Stakeholder relationship management • Corporate gifts and clothing CMD is responsible for the implementation of the University’s strategic corporate marketing plan. It executes this plan through an integrated marketing and communications programme, which includes: Enhancing our Brand To enhance its position as a comprehensive university providing quality education, UNIZULU needs to present to the public a clear, united, and immediately recognizable “personality” or brand. To communicate this solidarity, it is essential that the university community understand the significance of their role in building the university’s brand. Our brand is build over time through consistence messages we communicate in every medium: our logo, our brand mark; the experiences of our students and alumni; our reputation in the community and across the globe – in everything we offer. The brand guide introduces and repositioning UNIZULU to all our stakeholders. It outlines the principles on how UNIZULU brand is expressed to instill familiarity, to reinforce experience and to protect our equity. It is important that in communicating with those communities we project ourselves as members of a strong, efficient, professional and integrated institution. Every interaction between the University and any organisation or member of the public has impact on how we are perceived. Internal Communications Internal communication focuses on staff and students through communication channels such as Ongoye Online, university wide notices, website and social networks. Publications CMD takes responsibility for a variety of publications, including newsletters, brochures, as well as a range of corporate reports including the Annual Report. Media Liaison CMD communicates to internal and external audiences about the activities at the University. Regular media releases are issued based on academic, research and community engagement activities. CMD is also responsible for the development of newsworthy stories for the various news mediums within the university sphere, such as UNIZULU news and the UNIZULU website, as well as external media. Stakeholder Relationship Management CMD constantly interacts with all stakeholders including employees, unions, students, state institutions, other tertiary institutions, school principals, teachers, ambassadors, community-based organisations, donors and the general public. Each interest group has different expectations as well as perceptions. In our interaction with these stakeholders an attempt is made to give accurate information about the university on a regular basis. This is done through Events, Schools Liaison and Alumni sections of CMD. Events Events form an integral role in the University’s social spheres, providing an opportunity for the University community to network with professionals and experts across sectors and within the Higher Education Sector and the opportunity to establish new collaborations and partnerships. All corporate events of UNIZULU are managed by CMD. Schools Liaison CMD organises and undertakes visits to schools, as well as identifies and attend relevant career exhibitions. We also provide relevant and up-to-date information for learners, teachers and other prospective students. We welcome enquiries from any school, and we will try our best to work with any school that approaches us. We encourage all schools to visit us during our open days (hyperlink to the poster) Alumni Relations Strategic stakeholders are engaged on a regular basis in order to exchange information that best advances mutual interest. Electronic and Web Communication CMD is responsible for managing and monitoring UNIZULU’s corporate web environments as well as ensuring the effective use of the internet and multimedia to communicate with all stakeholders. Reprographics CMD is responsible for designing and producing high quality printed material required by academic and administration staff. These include, among other things, material such as business cards for staff, brochures leaflets, flyers, booklets, programmes, document covers, calendars and posters.
