The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) entered two teams in this year’s annual LexisNexis Mock Trial competition held in Port Elizabeth last month, with one coming second overall.
The lecturer who accompanied the students, Tersia Oosthuizen said: “Our second place was well earned and I was extremely proud of their performance and sportsmanship.”
She added that this was really a good learning experience for both teams. They took the advice from presiding officers and built on their knowledge round for round.
Oosthuizen said it is more than a mere competition, with every student being a winner for facing the fears of appearing in “court” for the first time. She said it is also about addressing the “court” on complicated issues and making mistakes to learn from and grow.
“It is truly a learning experience and I hope that next year we will be able to extend this opportunity to more of our students,” she concluded.
Law student, Nhloso Magwaza said it was an incredible experience to be part of the competition. “It’s not often that a student will argue his case before a High Court Judge, two Senior Counsel and two Advocates. I appreciate everyone who made this possible,” he said.
