DVC: Research & Innovation – Advocate of the High Court of South Africa
Prof Midgley took up the reigns as DVC: Research and Innovation in March 2012. He has been an NRF-rated researcher since 2003, a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) since 2004 and serves on several Editorial Committees. He has been a member of NRF Assessment Panels since 2002 and currently serves as one of the Panel Chairpersons. In addition, he is a member of the DHET’s Research Outputs Assessment Panel and a member of the Research Information Management System (RIMS) Advisory Board. Prof Midgley’s fields of research include the Law of Delict, Appropriate Dispute Resolution and Legal Education. He has over 100 publications to his credit, including three books which cover Lawyers’ Professional Liability, Principles of Delict and The Law of Delict in South Africa.
He previously served as DVC: Academic Affairs and Research at University of Fort Hare (UFH) from July 2008 to February 2012, prior to that as Dean of Law at Rhodes University (RU). Prof Midgley holds a B Com LLB from RU and a PhD from University of Cape Town (UCT). In 2009, he was appointed Professor Emeritus.
